Hi everyone,
Another exciting piece of news for the Pacific!
I would like to share that the project preparation funding for the development of the Matanataki Pacific Fund 1 (MPF1) has been approved by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
MPF1 aims to invest patient equity and quasi-equity financing in approximately 15 to 20 locally owned small businesses and community-owned cooperatives across Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The fund will strengthen local supply chains across four key sectors: waste management and recycling, regenerative agriculture, sustainable fisheries, and low-impact tourism.
In addition to providing investment, the fund will offer active support to businesses before and after investment, while a donor-funded technical assistance facility will help enterprises become investment ready. The fund also seeks to place women at the center as both beneficiaries and decision-makers.
Matanataki is the first dedicated adaptation-focused private equity fund in the Pacific. By prioritizing self-liquidating investment instruments, the initiative aims to ensure that ownership and wealth remain with Pacific founders and communities, thereby supporting locally led climate action. The fund also aims to demonstrate that this approach can be both climate-responsive and commercially viable.
